Learning objectives

  • Recognize the relationship between ISO 9001 and other relevant standards and regulatory frameworks
  • Understand the auditor’s responsibilities in planning, leading, and following up on management system audits per ISO 19011
  • Develop the ability to lead individual audits and coordinate audit teams
  • Learn to interpret ISO 9001 requirements specifically within the context of a QMS audit
  • Build the competencies needed to plan, lead, report on, and follow up on audits in compliance with ISO 19011

PECB ISO 9001 Certification Path and Requirements

Upon successfully passing the exam, you may apply for one of four professional credentials tailored to your level of experience. All credentials require passing the PECB Certified ISO 9001 Lead Auditor Exam (or an approved equivalent) and signing the PECB Code of Ethics.

1. Certified ISO 9001 Provisional Auditor

Suitable for newcomers who have mastered quality management theory but lack practical field experience.

  • Exam Requirement: Successfully pass the PECB Certified ISO 9001 Lead Auditor Exam (or equivalent)

  • Professional Experience: No prior experience required

  • Audit/Project Experience: No prior experience required

  • Additional Requirement: Sign the PECB Code of Ethics

2. Certified ISO 9001 Auditor

Intended for professionals with foundational experience in quality management and audit settings.

  • Exam Requirement: Successfully pass the PECB Certified ISO 9001 Lead Auditor Exam (or equivalent)

  • Professional Experience: Two years of total experience, including at least one year specifically in Quality Management

  • Audit/Project Experience: A minimum of 200 hours of qualifying project and audit activities

  • Additional Requirement: Sign the PECB Code of Ethics

3. Certified ISO 9001 Lead Auditor

The standard credential for seasoned professionals fully qualified to plan, execute, and lead QMS audit teams.

  • Exam Requirement: Successfully pass the PECB Certified ISO 9001 Lead Auditor Exam (or equivalent)

  • Professional Experience: Five years of total experience, including at least two years specifically in Quality Management

  • Audit/Project Experience: A minimum of 300 hours of qualifying project and audit activities

  • Additional Requirement: Sign the PECB Code of Ethics

4. Certified ISO 9001 Senior Lead Auditor

The highest tier, reserved for expert practitioners with extensive leadership experience in managing complex QMS audits.

  • Exam Requirement: Successfully pass the PECB Certified ISO 9001 Lead Auditor Exam (or equivalent)

  • Professional Experience: Ten years of total experience, including at least seven years specifically in Quality Management

  • Audit/Project Experience: A minimum of 1,000 hours of qualifying project and audit activities

  • Additional Requirement: Sign the PECB Code of Ethics

Note on Qualifying Audit Activities: To satisfy PECB requirements, your logged hours must include active participation in assessment processes, such as audit planning, program management, documentation review, on-site audits, drafting nonconformity or final reports, and leading audit teams.
