Training Skills

  • Delivery of a pre-prepared training session on a subject chosen by the participant that relates to their work.

Note: The duration of each participant's training session will depend on the length of the course and the number of attendees. An ideal group size is eight participants.

  • Comprehensive one-to-one and group feedback

Preparing a Training Session

  • Key questions for the trainer to consider in advance:
    • Why am I the right person for this?
    • Logistics regarding what, where, when, how – and how long?
    • Understanding how the answers to these questions influence the structure of the training session
  • Structuring the content:
    • Research – gain expertise in the subject
    • Organizing the content logically
    • Creating and using complementary visual aids

Preparing the Trainer

  • The three fundamental communication tools for a trainer:
    • Verbal – the words used, avoiding slang and jargon
    • Vocal – the tone and sound, avoiding distracting verbal tics and excessive punctuations
    • Visual – the presenter's appearance: attire, mannerisms, and presence
  • Rehearsing the training session – and obtaining honest feedback from a trusted source
  • Managing nerves

Preparing the Environment

  • Room layouts – and how they convey underlying messages to attendees
  • Using the room to enhance the training experience
  • …and tidying up after the course

Evaluation

  • The importance of evaluation
  • Processes for obtaining and utilizing participant feedback

Training Skills – revisited

  • Delivery of another training session (after suitable preparation time).
